Description

One day in ancient Rome

Walk on an ancient lane, enter through a door in the Ancient Walls, visit a Roman House … and then dive in the center of the old city

Upon one of the hills of Rome there is a neighborhood where the ancient age survives, only barely hidden by modern buildings. This is an extensive area just off the Colosseum, but several meters above the dangerous valleys below, and therefore developed as location for monasteries and churches since the end of the Roman Empire. This is the Celio Hill: above here time has stopped, and we can recreate the exemplary path that for ages unrolled from the city walls to the vital center downtown.

Although just 5 minutes from the crowded monuments of Rome, this is still a very peaceful area, almost no tourist comes up here, and we will walk exclusively on the ancient original route !

Starting from one of the Barracks of Rome, we’ll enter in town walking through the Door Caelimontana that still opens into the military walls, and walking on the ancient lane we’ll approach one roman temple and enter one Roman House, to see its everyday rooms and pretty frescoes.

Then, descending from the hill, we’ll reach the oldest and longest living entertainment building of all time: Circus Maximus, where chariots races where set from the beginning of the civilization.

From here, still following the ancient path, we’ll reach the shore of the river (where Rome has begun) and its most ancient temple dedicated to Hercules.

Eventually, walking on the ancient Vicus Tuscus and Vicus Iugarius we’ll reach another of the seven hills, the Capitol Hill, and following the Sacred Way on the Roman Forum we’ll enter into the most famous Flavian Anfiteather : the Colosseum.

In total, this tour lasts for 3 hours, of which about 60 minutes of walk, entirely downhill or on plain, ending up visiting a very large portion of the existing ruins of Ancient Rome, combining some of the most famous monuments with others out-of-the-path !

On your request, it’s possible to cut some of the path, or add other sites, so to tailor up the tour upon your personal needs
