Description

Papal Churches

The Major Papal Basilicas, also known as the Patriarchal Basilicas, are the four most significant churches within the Roman Catholic tradition:

  • St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican City)
  • St. John Lateran (Rome’s cathedral and the Pope’s official seat)
  • St. Paul Outside the Walls
  • St. Mary Major

For centuries, visiting these four basilicas has been an essential part of thepilgrimage to Rome during a Holy Year . Each is distinguished by the presence of a Holy Door, prescribed as a destination for pilgrims seeking the indulgences of the Roman Jubilee.

Only the Pope and his delegates are permitted to celebrate Mass at the high altar of these basilicas. Traditionally, they were open 24 hours a day, staffed by a college of priests available at all times to hear confessions.

During the Jubilee of Mercy, these basilicas host special ceremonies and celebrations, making them a profound spiritual and cultural experience.
